Fire in apartment with high damage to the building

Darmstadt (ots) – On Saturday afternoon (May 1st) at 4:50 p.m., a passer-by reported a strong development of smoke from a window of an attic apartment in a side street off Frankfurter Strasse. The apartment building, an old building, was cleared by the fire brigade and police forces. The 83-year-old resident of the apartment and her 59-year-old son were able to leave the apartment on time. The son had previously tried in vain to bring the fire under control himself by bringing the causative electric blanket from his mother’s bed into the bathtub. Both were examined on suspicion of smoke poisoning and then stayed on site at their own request. The apartment on fire is now only partially habitable. In the apartment below, a room had to be locked. The residents were able to return to their apartments after the extinguishing work was completed. The amount of the material damage caused is estimated at approx. 80,000-100,000 EUR. Frankfurter Strasse had to be closed for two hours because of the operation. manufactured: Steffen Pietschmann, police chief on duty
