Fire in a shelter for asylum seekers

Darmstadt (ots) – The rescue control center of the fire brigade will be informed on Thursday evening (May 20th) at 8:02 pm about a strong smoke development from a window of a room in the asylum accommodation in Michaelisstrasse in Darmstadt. The fire in the affected room, which was unoccupied when the fire broke out, was fought by the Darmstadt professional fire brigade using a turntable ladder from the outside and several troops from the inside. The fire made the two-story house uninhabitable. A total of 60 fire brigade, ambulance and police forces then cleared the entire building. 87 residents were brought to alternative accommodation in Darmstadt. This was organized by the social administration of the city of Darmstadt and the DRK. The residents were transported with buses provided by HEAG. Michaelisstrasse had to be closed for three hours during the extinguishing work and the traffic had to be diverted. The detective service of the police headquarters in South Hesse took over the investigations on site. No information can yet be given about the cause of the fire. However, there was no evidence of a politically motivated background. Two people from the property’s security service, who were the first to arrive at the scene of the fire, were taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure because they had inhaled smoke gases. No other people were injured. The amount of the material damage caused is estimated at approx. 80,000 – 100,000 EUR.
