Fire hazard in hundreds of thousands of cars, but Mercedes has no parts to solve the problem: “Drive as little as possible”

Mercedes-Benz has to recall hundreds of thousands of cars, including in our country. A technical problem on GLE/GLS, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, GLC, CLS and G-Class models may cause the coolant pump to leak and cause a fire. However, the problem cannot be repaired immediately because the necessary spare parts are missing. In the meantime, it is recommended to drive as little as possible.

Thierry Goeman,

These are diesel models that rolled off the line from 2017 and which were also sold in our country. Mercedes does not want to say how much exactly. Worldwide it would be about 800,000 vehicles. The problem is a leak that could occur in the coolant pump. That could cause a fire.

The Belgian spokesman for Mercedes-Benz Sebastien Van den Moortel confirms the problem, but points out that fire would only occur in the most extreme case. “So there is certainly no reason to panic,” it sounds.

Normally, in such a case, a recall is immediately organized. But not now. Van den Moortel tells us because the necessary hardware and software to carry out the repair are simply not available.

Letter to customers

A customer letter that is currently being prepared and will be out soon explains the reason for the recall and asks drivers to be patient for a while. “They will also be warned to contact their garage immediately if they see a coolant warning on their dashboard that could cause damage. A diagnosis can then be made in the workshop and, if necessary, the leak can be repaired pending a definitive solution,” says Van den Moortel.

When all parts for the recall are available, customers will receive a second letter inviting them to make an appointment at their garage to perform the repair.

In the meantime, Mercedes drivers are urged to use their vehicle as little as possible and with great caution
