AFPThe burnt out GNPOC tower

An eighteen-storey office building has burned down in the Sudanese capital Khartoum. The 65-meter-high Greater Nile Petroleum Oil Company Tower was a landmark building in the city’s skyline.
It is not clear what caused the fire, but fighting has been going on in the capital for some time between the government army and paramilitary RSF troops. It is unclear whether people died in the fire. The tower housed the headquarters of an oil company.
The building’s architect reacts with shock to X. “What needless destruction,” writes Tagreed Abdin. “This really hurts.”
Old power struggles
The war in Sudan broke out in April when an old power struggle between rival groups flared up over whether the paramilitary RSF should be incorporated into the government army. So far, neither side has been able to gain the upper hand in the battle.
The violence has already cost the lives of many people. The official death toll stood at 4,000 last month, but that is probably only a fraction of those killed. More than five million people have also fled.
Last week, dozens were killed in an airstrike on a market in the Sudanese capital. Both parties blamed each other for this.
