Fire emergency in Peru, 3,300 hectares destroyed

(ANSA) – LIMA, 15 SEPTEMBER – Fire emergency in Peru, where the uncontrolled fire has already destroyed more than 3,300 hectares of natural areas and agricultural land. In recent weeks the data has been alarming and, currently, there are 51 active fires in 14 regions of the Andean country, according to information from the National Information System for the Prevention and Attention to Disasters (Sinpad). According to the National Center for Emergency Operations of the Indeci, the Civil Protection of Peru, the most affected region is that of Cusco, which currently has 31 fires. This year alone, ten people have already lost their lives, almost all elderly, while the fires in the Peruvian Amazon continue to destroy ancient natural habitats of species at risk of extinction, starting with the Andean bear. The office of the Ombudsman has asked the government of President Dina Boluarte to intervene to contain the disaster and, in an official statement, has asked that “a state of emergency be declared in the regions affected by this catastrophe”. The Peruvian presidency has declared that 60% of the fires have been extinguished, but in several regions of the country the fire continues to be uncontrollable. (ANSA).
