During the night of June 30, 2023 to July 1, 2023, the Persan town hall in Val-d’Oise was completely destroyed in a fire. Many public buildings were targeted during urban riots following Nahel’s death. The Versailles gendarmerie research section was in charge of the investigation.
“Investigators from the Versailles gendarmerie research section, reinforced by judicial police officers from the Paris research section (…) and judicial police officers from the Val d’Oise gendarmerie group carried out the arrest of 18 people“, announces the Pontoise public prosecutor’s office in a press release.
The Versailles gendarmerie research section was in charge of the investigation following the fire which ravaged part of the Persan town hall on the night of Friday June 30 to Saturday July 1. The municipal police station was also ravaged by flames during urban riots which followed Nahel’s death.
Olivier Klein, then Minister Delegate for the City and Housing, visited the site describing “c“unspeakable acts.”
Around thirty hooded young people attacked the public building. “When we attack the conservatory, the town hall, those who support people in difficulty, it is not to express support for the deceased young person, but rather to settle scores: to become the Republic. We offer our condolences to the family, but these events have nothing to do with each other. There is freedom of expression of course, but this is thugocracy. It is the idea of fighting with the State and the Republic“, declared the municipality at the time.
Residents of Persan also reacted to the fire at the town hall: “Burning the town hall is, in my opinion, burning the population.“, a resident of the town was indignant. “See the office there, it’s the registration office for young children, from kindergarten to elementary school.“, he regretted.
The city of Persan announced this Tuesday the opening of municipal services in an annex town hall located at 31, avenue Jean-Jaurès.
