NEW YORK — Explosions erupted in a Long Island city Saturday evening as a fire engulfed its fleet of garbage trucks parked at a maintenance facility.
At least six trucks were destroyed in the city of Huntington out of 15 vehicles in the fleet, the city supervisor said in a statement.
“I am relieved to report no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation, however it does not appear to be suspicious,” said supervisor Ed Smyth.
Firefighters intervened and managed to bring the situation under control, but not before the fire had reached nearly half of the city’s truck fleet. Despite the leak, the city believes crews can meet regularly with scheduled garbage pickup.
However, yard waste will be stopped this week.
“The explosions that many residents reported hearing came from the burning truck tires,” Smyth added.
