Fire Destroys Garage with Vintage Car Inside

At 14.33 the police and fire brigade received a report of a fire in a garage in Kvelde.

– There must be a car in the garage. Will be updated when emergency services arrive at the scene, the police wrote on Twitter.

Operations manager at Sør-Øst 110, Arild Reinhartsen, said just before 3pm that the fire service was on the scene.

– The fire service is putting out the fire, Reinhartsen said.

– Is there a risk of spreading to other buildings?

– The risk of spreading is more or less under control. There is a house on the plot of land the garage stands on, and that is mainly what the fire could possibly spread to, but as I said, they have reasonable control over this now, said the operations manager.

The fire brigade from Larvik and Sandefjord assisted in the extinguishing work.

A certain risk of explosion was reported at the site, and a safety margin of 150 meters was established.

– The danger of explosion is over, said the police’s incident leader at the scene, Jon Terje Stäheli at around 3.20pm. The safety zone was discontinued.

At 15.21 it was reported that the fire was under control, said operations manager in the South-East police district, Øystein Eikedalen.

The danger of explosion at the site was not due to the fire site’s proximity to a petrol station.

– The risk of explosion was linked to the plot, where there were some propane bottles, says Eikedalen.

There have been no injuries in connection with the fire. There was a car inside the garage that has been completely destroyed.

– It was a vintage car, says the operations manager.

The Wiatr-Nowak family is one of the neighbors of the fire plot, and found out about the fire while they were in the center of Kvelde. They then rushed back to get their fire extinguisher to try to help with the extinguishing effort, but were told by emergency services on the scene to get to safety.

The incident leader at the scene, Jon Terje Stäheli, said that the spectators were too close to the fire.

– People were far too approachable, they were far too close and thought too little about their own safety, said the task leader.

At present, the police have no idea what caused the fire.
