As the Adams administration prepares to open a temporary shelter for asylum seekers at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, the Fire Department is raising concerns about fire safety at the site.
According to the New York Post, fire inspectors who were at the federally owned airfield say the fire hydrants are too far away and mostly “unreliable.”
The report also notes that portable fire extinguishers will be the only firefighting devices at the site.
And he adds that it is possible that firefighters will have to use water from Jamaica Bay in case they have to put out fires.
Despite all this, the Post says the city plans to open Floyd Bennett Field in the coming days where it hopes to house about two thousand immigrants.
In recent weeks, the Fire Department closed the shelter at the former Touro College campus in Midtown and the former St. John Villa Academy on Staten Island due to fire code violations.
