Fire death toll in Yemen refugee camp rises to eighty | NOW

The fire in a refugee camp in Yemen has now claimed more than 80 lives, local sources report. Just after Sunday’s fire, eight deaths were reported.

The fire also injured 150 people. The condition of most of the injured would be critical, anonymous sources say. The victims, especially people who stayed in the refugee camp, are treated in several hospitals.

At the time of the fire, the camp, located in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, is said to have contained nearly 900 migrants. These are mainly Ethiopians, says the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Yemen is home to many young Africans who want to travel through the war-torn country to the rich Gulf states and hope to build a better future there. The number of migrants making this trip fell to 37,500 last year, partly due to the corona pandemic. A year earlier this involved 138,000 people.
