Several fires broke out early Wednesday morning in the overcrowded Greek refugee camp Moria on Lesbos. Inhabitants of the camp are being evacuated. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Fires are currently raging both inside and outside the camp. Images show that many refugees are on the move with their belongings. The local police reports that residents of the camp are being brought to safety. On Wednesday, fires also broke out in two other places on Lesbos.
At least 28 firefighters are present with 9 fire vehicles to get the fire under control. Strong gusts of wind on the island only make the fire worse.
Moria, the largest refugee camps on the Greek islands, currently houses thirteen thousand refugees, while there is actually room for only three thousand people.
Last week, a corona infection was first diagnosed in Moria. The counter is now at 35. Aid organizations have feared this for some time, because many people live close together and the medical facilities in the camp are limited.
