Several homes, including an apartment complex, and a number of catering establishments and shops are no longer accessible. The road is closed. No hazardous substances have been measured, but the air is still present.
The fire brigade is present with several vehicles and has scaled up to GRIP1. This scaling up makes it possible to consult centrally with all emergency services and to better coordinate the deployment of equipment and men.

Flushing the sewer can cause more complaints
The source of the garlic-like gas smell is not yet known. The fire brigade started flushing the sewer around 5:30 p.m. The fire brigade stops flushing around 8 p.m. The Safety Region warns that the stench can get worse before the stench diminishes. If people develop health problems due to the smell, they can report to the ambulance at Casino Big Apple on Weerstraat.
The fire brigade is asking people who also smell the air inside to come forward. This may provide clues as to where the stench is coming from. Fire department officer Jolanda Meeder: ,,The stench is moving somewhat in the direction of the suburb, where the Hart van de Betuwe establishment is located.” That has to do with flushing, which can take up to 19 hours.
Previously there was talk of apartments that would have been evacuated, but that is not correct, according to the fire brigade. Residents have been told that if they are bothered by the stench, it might be better to go outside for a while. Several residents have provided shelter themselves, or have sought a sunny terrace.
There is no danger, the spokesman said.

Very weird
The owner of restaurant Gaia on the Plein (just behind the Zoutkeetstraatje) is open as usual, despite a barrier tape in front of the door. “With this weather, everyone wants to sit outside. But no idea what’s going on. I don’t smell or smell anything. Very weird.” Incidentally, all terraces and catering establishments on the Plein are open.
The covers of the wells have also been removed a street further, in Tolhuisstraat. The firefighters there don’t smell a strange smell, they report.
