The fire brigade was turned out on Saturday evening for a wildfire near Eindhoven. On arrival it turned out not to be as big as initially thought. A section of about thirty by thirty meters burned down.
The fire raged at the Leenderfietspad in Eindhoven, which is on the south side of the city along the N2. It was temporarily closed off to allow firefighters to get to the fire.
But spokesman for the fire service Frank Poels says that the fire turned out to be not too bad: “The units that were the first to reach the fire dealt a big blow.” Shortly afterwards, the scale was again reduced and the first cars could return to the barracks.
Eventually a piece of forest about thirty by thirty meters burned down. It was partially enclosed by sand and water, which prevented the fire from spreading as quickly.
Drought
Because it is so dry, the fire brigade generally turns out large when a wildfire is reported. “The first blow is worth a thaler,” said the spokesman. “As a result, it may appear larger in the message than it actually is.”
Two fire extinguishers and a water tank remained at the nature reserve to extinguish the fire. And that turned out to be a good thing, because later in the evening there appeared to be a small fire raging in the forest, a little further. A press photographer who had stayed behind had alerted the fire brigade.
