Fire Breaks Out at Paper Factory in Trondheim, Extensive Damage Expected

– The fire service has now isolated the fire. It is still burning at the site, says operations manager Håvard Høyem in the police.

It was at 10.18 that the fire service received a report that there was a fire in a paper warehouse at the paper factory just outside the center of Trondheim.

Visible flames are rising from the pile of paper and the fire service is working to put it out. This work can take a very long time.

– The smoke goes straight up, so there is no need to evacuate anyone in the area. The convenience store has closed, says Høyem.

He says they expect the extinguishing work to continue throughout the afternoon and evening.

Made a fire escape

The fire brigade feared for a while that the fire would spread to the paper warehouse located under the roof of the factory. Wheel loaders were therefore used to create a fire escape between the paper that burns outdoors and what is inside.

There should therefore be no danger of the fire spreading further.

– There is a large amount of cardboard that has caught fire, says Høyem.

In 2013 there was also a big fire in the paper factory, which lasted for days.

The Civil Defense will help

The fire service is on site with all available personnel.

According to the fire service on the scene, the Civil Defense has been called to help with the extinguishing work. This is done because it is expected that the extinguishing will take a long time and the firefighters will eventually need relief.

– No injuries have been reported, but there is a lot of smoke in the area, says operations manager in the police, Håvard Høyem.
