Fire Breaks Out at Major Oil Refinery in Russian Black Sea Port City – Latest Updates

A fire broke out yesterday at a major oil refinery in the Russian Black Sea port city of Tuapse. Emergency crews battled the flames for hours.

“According to the emergency situation service in the Tuapse district, a fire broke out on the territory of the oil refinery in the city,” the administration of the Krasnodar region reported.

Sergey Boyko, the Tuapse district governor, wrote on the Telegram app that the fire was contained to the refinery complex.

“I am at the scene of the fire. I am burning a vacuum plant on the territory of the oil refinery. According to the information, there are no casualties or injuries so far. Please trust official sources of information and do not publish videos from the scene of the accident to avoid adverse consequences.” , Boyko warned.

However, in Telegram, various media outlets published video footage and photos of the flames engulfing part of the refinery.

Authorities at Sochi airport, which is the main airport for the region and lies about 100 kilometers southeast along the Black Sea coast, said all flights had been cancelled.

Days ago, Russia’s largest LNG producer, Novatek, announced that it had been forced to suspend some operations at its huge Baltic Sea terminal due to a fire caused by what Ukrainian media claimed was a drone attack. The giant Ust-Luga complex, located in the Gulf of Finland, about 170 km west of St. Petersburg, is used to transport oil and gas products to international markets. According to Novatek’s website, it processes stable gas condensate into light and heavy naphtha, jet fuel, fuel oil and gas oil.
