A huge fire broke out at Eden Gardens, the iconic cricket stadium in Kolkata. Local media reports that a fire broke out in one of the dressing rooms of the stadium. The incident took place during renovation work at the stadium ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Local media ‘Sangabad Pratidin’ reports that the fire broke out around 11.50 pm. Members of the ground staff were the first to see smoke coming from the ‘away team’ dressing room. Renovation work was going on outside this dressing room. According to reports, smoke was rising from the false ceiling of the dressing room. Two fire engines rushed to the spot and doused the fire.
Last week, ICC and BCCI representatives inspected the venue. The fire is unlikely to affect preparations for the World Cup. Six matches will be played at Eden Gardens, including the second semi-final on November 16. The first match at the venue is the Pakistan-Bangladesh match on October 31. India will face South Africa on November 5 at the Eden Gardens.
