Fire at two different radio masts in The Hague, police are investigating | NOW

The safety region Haaglanden confirms to NU.nl at two different radio masts in The Hague in the night from Sunday to Monday. These are masts on the Jaap Edenweg and on the Laan van Poot. The fires were reported in quick succession.

Agents have dropped off the crime scene. A police helicopter was also flown out.

The mast on the Jaap Edenweg concerned a C2000 mast, which is used for communication between emergency services.

The police cannot yet confirm whether it is an arson attack, but is investigating the area. It is also still unknown how big the damage is.

Several fires have been started since the beginning of April

Since the beginning of April, several fires have been started or attempts have been made to this end in masts all over the Netherlands. The first of the series was on April 3 in Beesd, Gelderland. So far, three suspects have been arrested: one for arson in a radio mast in Groningen and two for arson in Dronten. As yet, nothing is known about the motives of the suspects.

The National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV) suspects that there are extremist protests against the arrival of the 5G network.

The impact of fire in a cell tower can be significant, police warn. For example, a fire can cause the telephone network to fail, so that emergency services can no longer be reached via 112.
