NOS News•
An unknown number of miners have been killed in a fire at a gold mine in southwestern Peru. According to the owner of the mine, there may be 27 people. The police are in the process of recovering the bodies.
The fire started during working hours. Local authorities therefore assume that all miners were in the mine at the time. The number cannot be confirmed, because it would not be possible to communicate with people in the mine.
The fire may have been caused by a short circuit. The fire would have spread quickly through a wooden barrier in the tunnels. Images on social media show plumes of smoke coming from the mine.
Peru is the largest producer of gold in South America and mining is an important industry for the country. There are dozens of fatal mining accidents in Peru every year.
