The fire that has been raging since Tuesday morning at a scrap processor on the Rietwaardenkade in Den Bosch is under control. According to a spokesperson for the municipality, the fire brigade may be working on retrofitting until after the weekend.
The fire broke out on Tuesday around 4.30 am at Gerrits recycling company, which processes cars and other scrap metal. Dozens of firefighters have since been engaged in fighting the fire.
They received help from two fire-fighting helicopters from the Ministry of Defense on Tuesday, but that support is no longer necessary. Two fire-fighting boats are still being used.
Due to smoke development, the GGD coronateststraat in the Brabanthallen and the regional training center Koning Willem I College had to close their doors yesterday. The institutions have now been reopened.
The smoke development has decreased a lot. “There is talk of a smoldering hope that flares up at times. But the fire is under control,” said a spokesman for the municipality of Den Bosch.
The water board is taking various measures
Yesterday, the Aa en Maas water board took various measures to prevent contaminated fire extinguishing water that ended up in the river Dieze from spreading further. For example, drift lines have been installed to collect the oil that was released during the fire. Due to this measure, inland shipping in and around Den Bosch has been blocked until further notice.
In the past there have been fires at recycling company Gerrits. At the time, it concerned scalding fires in the storage of car scrap. It turned out that more was stored than was permitted according to the permit. In April 2020, the company faced an imminent penalty and there have been no burning fires since then.
