Fire and flight: the madness of migrants in Pozzallo

Situation out of control in the reception center of Pozzallo. In the afternoon, a fire broke out throughout the structure, which investigators are now investigating. Pillars of intense black smoke were visible from the square outside the reception center. Apparently, according to local news reports, the fire could have developed after the protest gesture of some migrants who set fire to some mattresses. Two fire brigade teams and some police squads intervened immediately on the spot. Immediately after the fire, some migrants, about 30 of the 80 present in the sector affected by the fire, would have fled taking advantage of the confusion. According to some sources, a fire would have developed inside the structure as a sign of protest by some migrants. Some mattresses would have ended up in the viewfinder.

A revolt of migrants

Now both the firefighters and the police are trying to reconstruct the exact dynamics of what happened. It is certainly not the first such episode. Already in the past, the Pozzallo structure, like other reception centers throughout Sicily, have been the protagonists of revolts carried out by migrants. The former Minister of the Interior, Matteo Salvini, spoke on what happened in Pozzallo and commented on the images of the fire on Facebook as follows: “Scary fire to the hotspot of #Pozzallo (Ragusa). Some press sources speak of revolt among illegal immigrants, who allegedly set fire to in protest. Rescue teams on site. Once confirmed, the immigrants set fire to the mattresses and 30 managed to escape. Crazy stuff”.

Endless landings

Therefore, the tension in the structures continues to rise. Structures increasingly full after the landings of the last few days on the Italian coasts. In Lampedusa the wave of landings does not stop and so now in the hotspot migrants also give themselves up to revolt. An endless emergency that has long involved the Sicilian reception facilities with repeated escapes of migrants.
