Firat Arslan: The Story of a Boxing Legend’s Last Fight

“It hurts my soul that I now have to talk about my last fight,” says Firat Arslan. Image: Imago

Firat Arslan is 53 years old, he has been boxing for 34 years and was world champion. When he started, he was driven by anger, but before he stops against someone who is almost 20 years younger than him, he feels reconciliation within himself. And melancholy.

Donzdorf in Swabia. Here, in the industrial area, Firat Arslan built a house. A house that is also a training center for him all alone. Ergometers, treadmills, sandbags, dumbbells, tons of iron. A boxing ring with competition dimensions. This is where Arslan, the prizefighter, has been preparing for his fights for many years. Just not this time.

This time he had been toiling here for two months, but because it is his last fight, which takes place this Saturday, this was only the start. He had trained himself not for the fight, but so that he could endure the following training camp. Arslan then spent eight weeks toiling in Turkey, in Erzurum in eastern Anatolia, at an altitude of 2,000 meters. Everything for his last fight, in which he meets the Bosnian Edin Puhalo, the European champion according to the World Boxing Association (WBA), in the Göppingen EWS Arena.
