In a communication sent to the media, Mélanie Bergeron, biologist at the Association forestière du sud du Québec, wants to remind the population that the presence of trees brings many benefits to humans.

Not only do they purify our environment and calm us down, but trees and forest plants are directly used to make medicines.

It gives an example of gum, or fir resin. This can be used in the treatment of respiratory infections, skin ulcers and inflammation of the mucous membranes, and to treat cuts and burns.

Ms. Bergeron also praises taxol; a substance extracted from Canada yew that can fight cancer by slowing or blocking the reproduction of cancer cells. The biologist points out that salicylic acid, or the active ingredient in aspirin, was discovered inside willows.

As for undergrowth plants, she cites five-leaved ginseng which regulates cholesterol levels, reduces symptoms of menopause and stimulates the immune system.

Goldenseal prevents and treats gastrointestinal infections, while Canada bloodroot helps remove tartar and gingivitis, adds Bergeron.
