Fiorentina-Juventus Match Controversy: A Political Question in the Midst of Tuscany’s State of Emergency

The choice to play Fiorentina-Juventus despite the state of emergency in Tuscany due to the flood caused a lot of controversy. The appeal of the clubs of the Fiesole curve, the beating heart of the Viola fans, to postpone the most heartfelt match in Florence for a matter of respect and to avoid using more useful law enforcement forces in the disaster areas, remained unheeded: hence the decision of the ultras not to go to the stadium. In the middle of the curve an empty space was created, a ‘noisy’ hole between the packed stands: at least a third of the 12,000 capacity. And if the embrace between the Viola and Bianconeri players during the minute of reflection was beautiful, the failure to postpone the match turned into a political question, beyond the Observatory’s note on sporting events with authorization to take place, after that the president of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, had embraced the Curva Fiesole line by joining the appeal. “There are no reasons to postpone Fiorentina-Juventus – the Observatory decided -. Having consulted the provincial public security authorities of Florence, on the compliant advice of the Serie A League, it has assessed that from the point of view of public order and safety , within the competence of the body, there are no reasons to order the postponement of the match”. For the carrying out of which “resources of the police forces were allocated, not taken away in any way from those involved in rescuing the population affected by the flood”. A fact confirmed by the prefect of Florence, Francesca Ferrandino: “Fiorentina-Juventus will be managed according to the established scheme and there will be no subtraction of men and resources from the primary importance of assistance to communities affected by bad weather events”. The mayor, Dario Nardella, underlining that the responsibility for the holding of a football match does not belong to the Municipality but “solely and exclusively to the Lega Serie A”, then added: “I have clearly posed the problem to the president, Lorenzo Casini of the advisability of the postponement. I also spoke about it with Minister Piantedosi even though I find these controversies really out of place at a time like this.” Which exploded anyway and among the first to ride them was the senator of Italia Viva Matteo Renzi who announced a parliamentary question. In the wake are the president of the Tuscany regional council, Antonio Mazzeo, the head of sport and the president of the senators of the Democratic Party, Mauro Berruto and Francesco Boccia, and the regional councilor for the League Giovanni Galli.
