Finnish Road Freight Traffic Declines Due to Economic Downturn and Ukraine Conflict

The economic downturn and conflict in Ukraine have led to a reduction in freight traffic on Finnish roads, traffic regulation company Fintraffic reports today, 17 January.

The total volume of road traffic in the northern European country increased slightly last year compared to the previous year. At the same time, the volume of heavy traffic decreased by almost five percent, and the use of passenger cars increased by 3%.

Rail passenger traffic also increased slightly, but freight traffic overall declined, especially towards the end of 2023.

The reasons, according to Fintraffic, are the weakening of the Finnish economy and the reduction in cross-border traffic.

Meanwhile, the day before it became known that sea freight between Finland and Russia increased sharply after the Finnish authorities closed checkpoints on the land border with the Russian Federation. Cargo ships from Finnish ports now sail across the Baltic Sea to St. Petersburg on a weekly basis, while previously maritime cargo transportation was scarce due to the high cost, the Yle broadcasting corporation noted on January 16.

Most cargo passes through the port of Hamina-Kotka, some through the port of Helsinki. It was not specified which goods are sent from Finland to the Russian Federation, but a significant number of cargo ships on this sea line belong to Estonian ship-owning companies, the publication says.

The delivery of cargo from Finnish ports to Russia is also carried out by ships from other European Union countries, and transportation is organized by companies registered in Finland.

As reported EADailyStatistics Finland earlier this Wednesday presented bankruptcies figures for the country. Last year, 3,315 local companies filed for financial insolvency, a quarter more than in 2022.

Let us remind you that Finland joined the anti-Russian sanctions that Brussels introduced against the Russian Federation in 2022.
