Finnish Prime Minister Considers Border Closure with Russia Due to Rising Asylum Seekers

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo says the country’s government is considering completely closing its border with Russia as the number of asylum seekers rises.

Details: Orpo noted that Russian border guards have changed their practice and are now allowing people without the necessary documents to approach the border; the number of such migrants is growing.

“This should be taken seriously. We are monitoring the situation,” he stressed.

According to him, the Finnish government is preparing tools to intervene in the situation, in particular, the possibility of closing one individual checkpoint or the entire border is being considered.

“There is no need to worry. The legislation is also regulated. We are monitoring the situation and are ready to take action,” added the Finnish prime minister.

He emphasized that the same situation is now repeating itself as during the previous migration wave of 2015-16.

“Then it was the same thing, towards the Finnish border released people without entry documentswho came to seek asylum in our country. In this sense, it seems like a conscious decision,” Orpo added.
