– It’s hard to put into words, I’m still shaking. We looked at the scoreboard, and understood that it would be an important putt. But I did not know how it went in the other matches. I knew I had to put it on, she says in Discovery’s broadcast.
Castren, who made his debut on the LPGA Tour as recently as last year, played an even singles match against Lizette Salas. When the American, who had never before lost a singles match in the Solheim Cup, missed a birdie putt on hole 18, the stroke revealed itself. The 26-year-old did not let the seriousness of the moment stop her from lowering her par-putt and defending the Solheim Cup title for Europe.
Debutant and Sagström among the victors
The victory was founded earlier in the day by, among others, debutant Leona Maguire and Swedish Madelene Sagström.
Maguire hit Jennifer Kupcho already on the 14th hole and on the 16th Sagström decided against Ally Ewing.
– It has been a good week, the team has been incredible. I have not contributed until today. I was standing on the ranks this morning thinking: “Wait a second, I have to be myself I can not play someone else’s game” and I found it today. I am very proud of myself, says Sagström in Discovery’s broadcast.
Nordqvist played a draw
Anna Nordqvist met Lexi Thompson in the very first single. After a close, well-played and entertaining match, the duel ended in a draw, just like when the stars met in the Solheim Cup four years ago.
– We both played very well. I would have liked to have put a few more putts, but you can not wish for more, it has been a good Monday, says Nordqvist in Discovery.
European supporters have been forced to stay home as a result of the corona pandemic, while the United States has been supported by 30,000 loud Americans. Nordqvist admits that she missed the cheers from the side.
“Has been tough”
– It has been tough without European supporters. You get no applause so you do not know if you missed the green. I had a good drive on the eleventh hole, but there was no applause so I did not know if it went well, she says.
