Finn got food poisoning from potatoes

Finn Svartvadet got severe food poisoning when he ate new potatoes that had turned green last Saturday.

– I had food poisoning before, so I recognized it. Your stomach boils, you vomit and you get diarrhea. Now I also have real pain in my stomach. I had a fever and the next day my bed was completely wet with sweat, she tells Dagbladet.

He has been sick for almost two days.

Was Sandefjord Blad who first mentioned potato food poisoning.

– Requires large quantities

Pia Gulbrandsen, communications director of Bama Gruppen AS, tells Dagbladet that toxins can form in potatoes that are exposed to light and heat for a long time.

– If you eat large quantities of green potatoes, it can be dangerous to your health, but tests show that you need to eat 3-4 kg of green potatoes to get sick, he says.

– In any case, we advise consumers to return the green potatoes to the store so that they can get a new bag of the right quality. adds Gulbrandsen.

It was Saturday night last week that Finn Svartvadet was supposed to make dinner – ribs with brown sauce and potatoes. At home in Sandefjord, Svartvadet has an open living room-kitchen solution, and while he made dinner, Svartvadet followed the news on TV.

I did not see it

Those that were labeled “Norwegian new potatoes” were in a closed bag, so that it was not possible to see the potatoes through the bag.

– It doesn’t take a lot of brains to make that dinner. I opened the bag and dropped two potatoes into the pot. Then I made the brown sauce I poured over it and had dinner, Svartvadet tells Dagbladet.

Svartvadet grew up on a potato farm.

– That you shouldn’t eat poisonous green potatoes was one of the first things I learned as a kid, he says.

However, this time he was oblivious.

But the potatoes didn’t just have green spots.

– The potatoes were dark green. All the potatoes in the bag were the same green color, says Svartvadet.

Contains nerve agent

“When the potato is exposed to sunlight and artificial light, it turns green and forms the nerve toxin solanine,” he writes Bramat.n.

Solanine, poison for the nerves, is dangerous for both humans and animals.

– Green potatoes should not be eaten, warns the Norwegian Food Safety Authority and advises throwing green potatoes away.

ON Matportalen write that the toxins called glycoalkaloids collect in the same places as chlorophyll, ie the green color.

Finn Svartvadet fears that Bama, who supplies the potatoes, has delivered rotten potatoes to several shops in the country.

– He doesn’t like the heat

– Potatoes cannot turn green in the bag. The reason potatoes turn green is that they become light. This is Bama’s fault. They know it’s dangerous and it’s a nerve agent developed from potatoes, says Svartvadet.

He therefore believes that the potatoes were green when Bama packed them.

Bama, on the other hand, tells Dagbladet that his potatoes are harvested, packaged and distributed in one day.

– Potatoes don’t like light and heat and the right temperature has a lot to say about quality. Therefore, they are kept cool and in the dark for the short time they are with us. We advise shops to have a lower temperature and less light where the potatoes are. In addition, it is important to ensure good lamination, so that the potatoes that have been around the longest are sold first, says Gulbrandsen.

Usually Finn Svartvadet carefully observes the potatoes. From now on, he will take a closer look at the potatoes.
