Finland’s Second Quantum Computer Completed: A Milestone in Quantum Computing Development

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, in collaboration with IQM Quantum Computers, has successfully completed the construction of Finland’s second quantum computer. With a total budget of EUR 20.7 million, Finland initiated its quantum computer projects in November 2020, aiming to develop a 50-qubit quantum computer by 2024. The recent completion of the 20-qubit quantum computer marks a significant milestone towards achieving this goal.

The development of quantum computing in Finland is part of a larger effort to strengthen the country’s position in the global quantum computing landscape. In addition to the budget allocated for the current project, the Finnish government has announced a budget of EUR 70 million (~US$74.3 million) to further scale up the quantum computer to 300 qubits and achieve quantum advantage.

Jan Goetz, CEO of IQM Quantum Computers, expressed pride in the accomplishment, highlighting the collaborative efforts within the European quantum ecosystem. IQM aims to continue promoting collaboration and engaging stakeholders to drive more investments in the quantum computing ecosystem, enabling it to become more competitive.

Pekka Pursula, Research Manager at VTT, explained some of the technological advancements made during the construction process. These include improved integration methods, signaling, and manufacturing and packaging techniques that allow for a greater number of qubits to be placed on a single silicon chip. This breakthrough in hardware integration will pave the way for further increases in the number of qubits in future quantum computers.

The newly completed 20-qubit quantum computer is located at VTT premises in Micronova, the national research infrastructure for micro and nanotechnology in Espoo, Finland. Notably, this facility already houses Finland’s first 5-qubit quantum computer, showcasing the country’s commitment to advancing quantum computing technologies.
