Finland on Thursday suspended the vaccination with Moderna for men under the age of 30 “for the time being” due to the risk of heart infections. Helsinki thus follows the path of its northern neighbours.

“A study involving Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark shows that men under 30 vaccinated with Moderna have a slightly increased risk of heart muscle inflammation,” said Mika Salminen, director of the Finnish Institute of Health and Welfare.
“The majority of myocardial inflammations are mild and heal on their own within a few days, but it remains a risk,” Salminen added. Finnish men under 30 will continue to be vaccinated with Pfizer for the time being.
Sweden on Wednesday suspended the use of Moderna “as a precaution” for men under the age of 30. Denmark and Norway have strongly advised against it for people under the age of eighteen due to the increased risk of heart muscle inflammation after the second dose.
Earlier in July, the European Medicines Agency extended the approval of the Moderna vaccine for people between the ages of 12 and 17.
