The Finnish government has decided to purchase 64 fifth-generation F-35A multirole fighters, manufactured by the American corporation Lockheed Martin. The deal will amount to about 10 billion euros. This became known on Friday, December 10.
“The acquisition of F-35 fighters will ensure the operational capabilities of the Finnish Air Force until the early 2060s,” said at the press conference Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen.
He stressed that the renewal of the fleet of fighters will also lead to a reform of the Defense Forces’ intelligence and control over the country’s territory, as well as defense management.
Finland selected the F-35A in a five-way tender. Among the contenders were also the American Boeing F / A-18 Super Hornet, the French Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale, and the Swedish Saab Gripen E / F.
The fighters will cost Finland 8.4 billion euros. The rest of the funds will be spent on various equipment and ammunition, including 200 AGM-158 JASSM cruise missiles.
According to Kaikkonen, “the quality-price ratio is good.” Each F-35 costs at least $ 120 million and is Finland’s largest military purchase.
The first F-35s will arrive in Finland in 2026. Deliveries should be completed in 2030.
Finland now has 62 F / A-18 Hornet fighters at its disposal, which will expire in 2030. They will be gradually decommissioned from 2025.
We will remind, Greece sent an official request to the United States on the purchase of up to 24 F-35 fighters… The country’s authorities want to establish a balance of power with Turkey with the help of American aircraft and French Rafale.
