Finland will reopen two border crossings to Russia this week. The border between the two countries closed two weeks ago because, according to Finland, the Russians sent groups of migrants there.
The decision applies until January 14. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has said that the crossings will close again immediately if necessary.
A crossing in the south and one in the east will open on Thursday. The aim is to see whether more asylum seekers report there. “Without lifting restrictions, we cannot verify whether the situation is improving,” Orpo said. There are eight border crossings in total.
The dispute over the border increased tensions between Finland and Russia. Helsinki accused Russia of sending asylum seekers to the border crossing. Finland called it a “hybrid attack”.
After the closure of the border, Russia said it found the situation threatening because Finland had sent extra guards to the border. The Kremlin spoke of an “increased concentration of military units”.
