Finland Temporarily Closes Petrozavodsk Branch of Consulate General in St. Petersburg

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland has decided to temporarily close the Petrozavodsk branch of the Consulate General in St. Petersburg, which means the suspension of its work for “an indefinite period.”

This is stated in message Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, which quotes the “European Truth”.

According to the department, “for now there is no need to maintain an office in Petrozavodsk, since the main tasks of the office have been significantly reduced,” the report says, adding that “if necessary, the office’s activities can be restored later.”

The office of the Consulate of Finland in Russian Petrozavodsk was founded in 1990. For three decades, its tasks have focused on immigration issues, bilateral contacts and the promotion of regional and cross-border cooperation.

At the beginning of this year, the Finnish Foreign Ministry made a similar decision regarding the office in Murmanskwhich is also administered by the consulate in St. Petersburg.

“The Consulate General in St. Petersburg will continue its work. The decision does not affect the functioning of Russian diplomatic missions in Finland,” the department added.

It should be noted that the closure of the consular office in Petrozavodsk became known on the same day when Finland officially became the 51st member of the North Atlantic Alliance.
