Finland Tells Join Nato, Here’s Putin’s Response

Jakarta

President Finland Sauli Niinisto informed the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin that his country will join NATO. This was conveyed by Niinisto to Putin, Saturday (14/5) local time.

The Finnish Presidential Office conveyed the notification by Niinisto by telephone. According to Niinisto avoiding tension is very important.

“The talks were carried out decisively. Avoiding tension was considered important,” Niinisto said.

However, the Kremlin responded by saying that Putin viewed Finland’s joining with NATO as a cessation of Finland’s military neutrality which was seen as a mistake. Because according to Putin, there is no threat to Finland’s security.

“Putin stressed that ending the traditional policy of military neutrality would be a mistake as there is no threat to Finland’s security,” he said in a statement.

“Such a change in the political orientation of the country could have a negative impact on Russian-Finnish relations developed over many years in the spirit of good neighborliness and cooperation between partners,” the Kremlin added.

Finland is expected to formally announce its offer of NATO membership on Sunday. Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said it was very important for his country to establish communication with neighboring countries.

“It’s very important for us to communicate with our neighbors, even if we don’t ask for any permission for our political moves,” he said.
