Finland Orders Destruction of Animals on Bird Flu Infected Fur Farms

Ankara (ANTARA) – Finland’s food agency has ordered that all animals on fur farms infected with bird flu be destroyed.

Fur farms confirmed to be infected have been asked to kill all foxes and raccoon dogs because they pose a public health problem due to the infection, the Finnish Food Authority said, Wednesday (13/9).

“The longer the virus can circulate in mammals, the greater the risk of mutations that could lead to infection in humans,” said the Finnish Food Authority.

“Regarding mutations that make it easier for the virus to transmit to humans, so far they have been found in the virus genome isolated from animals on six farms. These mutations have been detected in minks, foxes and raccoon dogs,” said the agency.

Authorities ordered the culling of around 135,000 animals, including 50,000 minks, 79,000 foxes and 6,000 raccoon dogs on farms where the bird flu virus was found.

Bird flu cases were reported at 26 fur farms in the Ostrobothnia region in western Finland.

At 11 farms, all animals were ordered to be euthanized and at five farms partial culling was ordered.
