Montreal Canadiens forward Patrik Laine will be trading his NHL jersey for the colors of his home country this February. Laine, who made his Canadiens debut Tuesday, was named to Team finlands roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.
The tournament, featuring NHL stars from Finland, Sweden, Canada, and the United States, will take place from February 12-20. Montreal’s Bell Center will host games from February 12-15, followed by games at Boston’s TD Garden from February 17-20.
Laine, who scored in his Canadiens debut after recovering from a preseason injury, won’t be the only Montreal player representing Finland. Forward Joel Armia was also selected for the team.
“I’m really excited to be part of this tournament,” Laine said. “It’s always an honor to represent Finland, and I’m looking forward to playing against some of the best players in the world.”
As entering the NHL in 2016, Laine has established himself as a prolific scorer, ranking fourth among active Finnish players with 205 goals. He joins a star-studded Finnish roster that includes Mikko Rantanen (Colorado Avalanche), Aleksander Barkov (Florida Panthers), and Sebastian Aho (Carolina Hurricanes), all of whom were named to the team in June.
The Florida Panthers led the way with four players on Team Finland: forwards Anton Lundell and Eetu Luostarinen, and defenseman Niko Mikkola, will join Barkov.the Dallas Stars will also be well-represented with Roope Hintz, miro Heiskanen, and Esa Lindell on the roster.
other NHL teams contributing multiple players to Team finland include the Colorado Avalanche (Artturi Lehkonen joins Rantanen) and the Utah Hockey Club (Olli Maatta and Juuso Valimaki).
Aho’s Carolina Hurricanes teammate,Jesperi Kotkaniemi,who helped Finland win gold at the 2018 World Junior Championship,was also selected for the team.
