Finland Major Strikes: Workers’ Rights and Benefit Cuts Spark Nationwide Protests

Major strikes started in Finland on Wednesday due to dissatisfaction over proposed changes to workers’ rights and cuts to benefits. The strike is expected to last until Friday, reports say The Guardian.

The strikes are a response to proposals from Finland’s centre-right government to make changes to the labor market. Those changes would limit workers’ right to strike and reduce unemployment benefits.

The strikes started on Wednesday and are expected to last until Friday. Another series of protests are planned for next week.

It is expected that a total of 300,000 people will participate in the strike days. Disruptions are predicted throughout the country. Kindergartens, shops, public transport and air traffic control will come to a standstill. Airlines Finnair expects that 550 flights will have to be cancelled.

The Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) and the Finnish Confederation of Professionals (STTK) have urged the government to abandon planned cuts and changes, which they say will lead to significantly more inequality.
