Finland plans to build new fences in several places on its border with Russia as a result of its invasion of Ukraine, government officials in Helsinki confirmed today, quoted by AFP.
Fearing, in particular, that Moscow was using migrants to exert political pressure, the Finnish cabinet yesterday unveiled a bill to strengthen fences along the nearly 1,300-kilometer-long border.
The Helsinki government wants the law to take effect as soon as possible. The news came after Finland applied for NATO membership last month, prompting it to fear Russia’s “hybrid retaliatory measures” such as cyber attacks and non-military destabilization operations, AFP reported.
There are currently low wooden fences along Finland’s borders to prevent livestock from passing through, AFP reported.
