The decision to temporarily close the border with Finland expires on January 15 and there is no new one yet. The Helsingin Sanomat publication writes that the passage is unlikely to be open.
Government sources told the publication that, most likely, the decision to close the border will be extended and it is unlikely that for an unlimited period. The publication notes that the government needs compelling legal reasons. This could come from intelligence data or the actual situation at the border – if, for example, more asylum seekers start arriving at the checkpoint. One way or another, the decision must be made no later than 24 hours in advance, otherwise the checkpoint must be opened at midnight on January 15. Perhaps it will be only one point on the eastern border.
The article also says that Finland is thinking about amendments to the current legislation. One of the options being considered is to allow only Russians and only Finns through Russian-Finnish checkpoints.
