Finkis Concert Review: The Biggest Concert and the Biggest Side Concert

The biggest concert and the biggest side concert

Last weekend, hip-hop artist Finkis offered two concerts in the VEF Kvartal – the “Biggest Concert” on Saturday, and the “Biggest Additional Concert” on Sunday. From the point of view of the title, witty, and also from the factual point of view, nothing objectionable – these were really the biggest solo concerts for him so far.

Finkis had interested the reviewer long before, that is, what kind of influential pedigree can boast of a good, yet ranked hip-hop musician, who on Lāčplēš day, November 11, earns an invitation to perform at the patriotic concert organized in the renovated Uzvaras park among such groups corresponding to such a concept as “Raxtu Raxti ” and “Skyforger”? And even before that, warming up the group “Astro’n’out” at the big concert “Arena Riga”? And he is also supported by the municipality on the Knowledge Day, September 1, in Nordeķu Park? And he has enough funds to carry out an impressive advertising campaign for his concerts? It was not possible to find out, but it was possible to watch Finkis’ performance and listen to him. I must say right away – it was not bad, not bad at all!

Raises the sporting bar of house concerts

If someone is wandering in their memories, trying to grab some information about who Finķis is (not to be confused with Zeļgis!), then this guy is best known for such a super hit as “Rocket Science” created in collaboration with Patriša. His account also includes such well-known songs as “Maza Rīga” and “How to spend your youth”, while Finķas’ debut album “Tāds slinkums”, created together with the electronic music duo “Pragaii”, was the Top of the Latvian music recording of the year award “Zelta mikrofons”. Top 5 Hip Hop Albums. In addition, he even got to one “microphone” – in the nomination of the best video, he sensationally won the main prize for the video for the song “Love of Self”, performed by Finķis, “Pragaii” and the singer Mur or Madara Murnikova.

“We had a plan not to play in Riga for two years – “Positivus”, friends, don’t count, it’s still a festival! For the most part, we “ketched” the overall chemistry of the team, performing concerts in the regions, and again – we have reached the first sold-out home concert in Riga! Why home? It’s like in sports when you finally play at home. This time, everything is as we want – a stage where industry talents are working, a sound that we have always wanted, and a team that holds it all together,” said Finķis even before the concerts. “I think the bar will be raised considerably for concerts of this size.”

Award to the one who won’t ask to ‘make noise’…

It is quite surprising that VEF Quarter Hall was chosen as the venue for the concert, but after the event I had to admit that there was nothing wrong with this decision – I also did not feel the humidity that Finķis was worried about. On the other hand, the sound was even shocking (in a good way), because it is usually much worse in this type of hangars, but in the case of Finkis, it was excellent. The swinging with the lights was special, because during the first songs the event looked like a badly designed barn, but later the necessary sharpness was forgiven on the lighting front.

Finkis is probably good friends with sports – this was confirmed by his statements (at the beginning of the concert, he mentioned that now he feels like before the “play off” games, when the first two games are at home, but then called for a break worthy of Kerch, “squatting ” and “jumping” the audience into the hall), and an energetic performance during which the musician moved through the stage structures with acrobatic dexterity. Plus points for communication with the audience, but a minus – Finķis used the stupid phrase “we make noise!” already used by Latvian rappers on the fourth song. (oh lord, how tired it is…). It was at the first performance of the song, so maybe it was still forgivable, unfortunately, at the sixth song, this phrase was heard again, but after that it was too lazy to list its frequency… The guest musician Patricia also sinned in this area.

The best in the concert – Patrisha and Aleksis Luriņš

“Finkis will be joined on stage by the integral part of the concerts – musicians Aleksis Luriņš, Andris Strazds, Krišjānis Bremšs and Elza Kaktiņa, who will take care of the highest energy level, “grandiose” guitar parts and electronic music experiments,” the audience was promised, and this promise was indeed fulfilled. and provided the most pleasant moments of the concert. Surprisingly, Finķas’ backing band made sure that the sound was like a proper rock concert. Andris Strazds provided decent guitar solos, Krišjānis Bremšs layered the drums like a real “metal player”, and Alexis Luriņš… It has never been clear how Alexis manages to make his bass sound as gut-wrenching as it does, but that’s exactly what he succeeds in – fantastic!

About guest musicians. If Patricia’s appearance on the stage was easy to guess (someday she finally had to bless Finkis with her presence to sing the famous “Rocket Science” together!), then the other guest was a surprise – she had already forgotten that Finkis and “Pragaii” were on the album The song “Sevis slinkums” included in “Taads slinkums” was sung by Mur, currently living in the British Isles (by the way, she released a new EP “Disbalanss” on December 1). Unfortunately, she also surprised in a negative sense – much more than singing, Madara was busy photographing the audience and what was happening on the stage. Maybe it was a subtle parody? If so, it was not read. On the other hand, Patriša “tore off the roof” – an absolute and complete showwoman!

Four points out of five

It is interesting that before “Rocket Science” Finķis performed… a cover version of “Credo” song “Disneyland”, and in a completely unexpected version – also an interesting surprise. Of course, all the best-known pieces of Finkis were played (he doesn’t have that many yet), including, to the reviewer’s delight, his most interesting song (thanks to Luriņš’s bass) “How to spend your youth”.

To summarize: Finķis is a peculiar hip-hop artist who, unlike many of his brothers in the profession, does not offer rudeness or stupidity from the stage, but a completely acceptable and musical performance. True, it still does not provide an answer to the questions asked at the beginning (about genealogies), but for the concert he can definitely be given a solid four in a five-point system. As if the concert was also filmed, which means that every music lover will probably be able to see it on their computer and mobile screens at some point.
