Finger fracture treatment, beware of functional disability if delayed

[메디컬투데이=조성우 기자] Finger fractures are common when performing work, sports activities, or doing housework. The problem is that many people who experience extreme finger pain after a fracture dismiss it as a simple injury. What is clear is that precise diagnosis and treatment are essential, considering the complex structure and function of the hand.

The hand is made up of five metacarpal bones that make up the palm and 14 digital bones that make up each finger. In particular, the thumb is made up of two digital bones, while the other four fingers are each made up of three digital bones to implement precise movements of the hand. A finger fracture refers to a case where deformation or damage occurs in these bones, and care must be taken because it can affect the epiphyseal plate or joint surface.

Finger fractures are divided into several types depending on the fracture site, and treatment methods vary depending on the type. A fracture of the terminal joint occurs when an impact is applied to the tip of the finger, which can cause damage to the nail or surrounding tissues. In particular, prompt treatment is necessary as swelling, pain, and even blood circulation problems may occur.

A boxer’s fracture is a fracture of the fifth metacarpal bone that occurs when an individual hits something with a closed fist. When it occurs, recovery can be achieved with simple fixation, but if deformation or displacement is severe, surgery is required. An avulsion fracture is when a tendon or ligament separates from the bone and usually occurs during sports activities. If there is concern about functional impairment, appropriate non-surgical or surgical treatment is required.

Above all, it is easy to overlook the importance of treatment due to the nature of injuries to small bones called fingers. If a finger fracture is not treated properly, it can lead to functional disability that causes great inconvenience in daily life. Therefore, prompt and accurate treatment is essential when a fracture occurs.

When diagnosing a finger fracture, the priority is to observe the degree of swelling, deformation, and pain at the injured area. Next, an X-ray is taken to check the fracture type and whether there is any damage to the joint surface. If a more accurate diagnosis is needed, computerized tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to determine soft tissue, nerve, and blood vessel damage. In particular, if nerve or blood vessel damage is suspected, additional sensory and motor testing may be considered.

The goals of finger fracture treatment are to prevent malunion or instability and to prevent swelling and stiffness through early hand movement. If the bone position is misaligned, first attempt manual reduction and stabilize the finger through splint fixation. If deformation is expected or instability is expected, surgical methods may be necessary.
