Fines up to 30 euros for those who do not wear a mask in public spaces

The Regional Government decided to anticipate the mandatory use of the individual protection mask in all public spaces, even those outdoors, for the month of August.

The mandatory use of a community protection mask applies “in spaces or places of access, permanence or use, public or similar”, explained yesterday the regional secretary of Health, Pedro Ramos, stressing that “all types of public space are included” , closed or open “.

The measure comes into force this Saturday, August 1, and its non-compliance can lead to fines of up to 30 euros, as reported by SIC Notícias, the vice president of the Regional Government, Pedro Calado. “It is a value that, for us, is irrelevant,” he told the same source.

Pedro Calado was also confronted with the indignation expressed through a petition against the mandatory use of the mask on the street. “Nobody likes to walk in the street wearing a mask, I don’t like it either […] especially on an island like ours, with a lot of heat, humidity and good weather, especially now in the summer, but I think it is more annoying to die with a virus ”, he defends, thus devaluing the petition that this morning already has more than 3,000 subscriptions.

Remember, as Pedro Ramos announced yesterday, that children up to 10 years old, “people incapacitated by the difficulty of putting on or removing the mask without assistance” and “other situations previously identified by health authorities” are not covered by the measure, as well like someone doing the beach or doing physical exercise. The supervision of the use of a mask will be the responsibility of the security forces and the Regional Authority for Economic Activities (ARAE).

With 105 cases of covid-19 registered, of which eight remain active, the Region announced this Tuesday that the situation of calamity in Madeira and Porto Santo would be extended until 31 August.
