Users were not given a proper explanation of what data the app collected from them and what happened to it, according to the Authority. For example, no privacy statement was available in Dutch.
TikTok does not agree with the fine and has lodged an objection.
Several million Dutch people use TikTok, including many children. They make short films of themselves, edit them and share the result with others.
TikTok recently established itself in Ireland. Therefore, it is up to the regulator in that country to decide whether TikTok has violated privacy in other ways as well.
“We value privacy and keep our community safe, especially when it comes to our younger users,” TikTok said in a statement.
