13 pharmacies in the Netherlands have received fines of up to 30,000 euros for illegally dealing in medicines between 2017 and 2019. According to the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ), this concerns 43 different medicines with a turnover value of 8.5 million euros. The medicines were mainly marketed in Germany.

Dutch pharmacies are not allowed to resell medicines to wholesalers. And medicines intended for Dutch patients may not be resold abroad without a permit. This can lead to shortages. Moreover, the quality and safety of these medicines can no longer be guaranteed if they are traded in a different way than usual.

The pharmacies concerned purchased medicines from Dutch pharmaceutical wholesalers and then sold them on to one other wholesaler. He then sold the medicines to a third wholesaler, who then marketed them in Germany.

This mainly concerned expensive drugs, which are much more expensive in Germany, resulting in considerable profits being made on trade.

The IGJ has received a small number of reports about other pharmacies that may also be involved in the illegal trade in medicines and has launched a follow-up investigation.
