It was just a request. In the middle of the corona pandemic, a customer in a discounter on Dehnhaide in Hamburg’s Barmbek-Süd district asked another man to put on a mask. Instead of doing that, he struck. On Wednesday, the Hamburg-Barmbek district court sentenced the bat to a fine totaling 1,800 euros.

June 2020: Life in Hamburg is determined by Corona, in supermarkets it is compulsory to wear a mask. The accused enters the shop without a mask. Another customer politely asks him to put on a mask. Then the defendant pushes him into a box full of melons and strikes. “I probably punched him in the face,” admits the 40-year-old in court. The other man is seriously injured: four teeth are loosened, two of them even die. There is also a black eye and bruises.
Victim doesn’t accept apology
The accused almost got away with impunity, he was able to flee first. But then a month later his victim recognized him on the street and called the police. And what does the defendant say about it? From his point of view everything “went badly”. He apologizes in court to the man he abused, but he doesn’t take it. “I just asked politely that he put on his mask – and then such an aggression,” says the witness angrily. The defendant accepts the verdict, so he now has a final criminal record.
