As part of the diabetes prevention week, from September 24 to October 1, the Regional Health Agency, Health Insurance and the University Hospital are offering the FindRisk Péi application to Reunion Islanders. A tool to prevent the risk of becoming diabetic.
Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by the presence of excessive sugar in the blood. Thus, one suffers from diabetes when the fasting sugar level is equal to or exceeds 1.26 grams per liter of blood during two successive dosages.
This disease particularly affects Reunion. Indeed, 70,000 patients are currently being treated on the island. A disease that grows by 4% each year. According to the ARS, there is twice as many people with diabetes in Reunion than in mainland France.
1 in 3 diabetics ignore their disease
The problem with diabetes is that it is a silent disease that causes many complications: kidney failure, blindness, neuropathy (damage to the nerves) or even arteritis. When pre-diabetes is diagnosed on time, the disease and its consequences can be avoided. Now, however, 7 out of 10 people with pre-diabetes develop the disease due to lack of screening.
In addition to genetic factors, and the age of the affected populations, the living environment and diet can influence the development of the disease, explains Dr. Yeganeh Brochot, endocrinologist and diabetologist.
There is a (genetic) ground, it is true but it is above all the environment, the absence of physical activity, sedentary lifestyle
Marie-Ange Pontalba has been diabetic for decades. The gramoune knows it, it is his cute sin, gluttony, which has led him to undergo treatment even today. She particularly liked tasting good madeleines and as she says herself, the appetite came with eating.
I took a lot of lemonade, candy (…) and it was good. I had no idea I would have had diabetes like this.
For Dr. Brochot, we can try to stop the progression of this chronic disease on the island by taking a few simple measures such as:
- make physical activity easy to access, especially for children and adolescents, whether through transport and financial aid,
- teach parents that a healthy and varied diet does not necessarily cost more. And the dishes are not complicated to prepare.
We can eat everything. Nothing is forbidden.
Thus, to avoid developing diabetes, especially when you have predispositions, you must adopt a healthy lifestyle by practicing regular physical activity and paying attention to the contents of your plate and your glass:
- consume fruits and vegetables, with a maximum of 3 fruits per day,
- avoid foods that are too sweet, especially refined sugar,
- avoid snacking between meals,
- measure the oil when cooking meals,
- favor water as the main drink,
- limit the amounts of alcohol.

FindRisk Péi: an app to help identify potential diabetics
The “FindRisk Péi”, understand Finnish Diabetes Risk Score, is an application that identifies people at risk for diabetes. Flashing the QR code available on the ARS Réunion website, you will be redirected to “FindRisk Péi” which will then offer you to answer eight questions combining known risk factors such as age, body mass index, lack of physical activity or family history.
The result varies between 0 and 26, knowing thata score above 12 is in favor of a moderate to very high risk of becoming diabetic. It is therefore strongly recommended to make an appointment with your doctor.
After screening, you will then be referred to a specialist to determine treatment, if necessary, and / or to a dietician to relearn how to eat a balanced diet.
Diabetes is a killer disease, especially type 2 characterized by a failing pancreas that cannot secrete enough insulin. Taking into account people who have died from complications related to diabetes such as neuropathy or stroke, diabetes is responsible for 34,000 deaths per year in France.
Prevention week actions
Prevention actions are multiplying, especially in the media in Reunion Island, to make the population aware of the risks of developing diabetes. Thereby,
- September 25, the health program “Vital” to be found at 3:45 pm on Réunion La 1ère. Pr Nobecourt, Dr Leruste and Dr Marion Billebeaud, Pharmacist Consulting of Health Insurance will present the FindRisk Pei application, inform and raise awareness among the population on the importance of getting tested, on the recommended practice of a balanced diet. and physical activity.
- October 13: the program “Les experts” at 11:00 am on Réunion La 1ère Radio. Prof. Nobecourt and Dr Jean-Marc Simonpieri from Assurance Maladie will speak on diabetes prevention, nutrition and the FindRisk Péi application.
