Finding the Ideal Temperature for Each Room to Save on Energy Costs

Outside the temperature is starting to drop again, so the heating is turned up a degree in many families. Increasing the temperature also increases the costs on the energy bill. At what temperature do you still feel nice and warm without costing yourself? Here is an overview per room.

In general, 19 degrees is the ideal temperature in the house. However, the desired temperature can differ from room to room.

Living space

In the living areas, such as the living room, the kitchen, an office and the dining area, you can save on your energy bill if you keep the temperature at 19 degrees, possibly one degree higher if it is really too cold.

Bedroom and circulation areas

In areas such as the corridor, entrance hall and toilet, the temperature does not have to be higher than 17 degrees. A bedroom only needs to be 16°C. A bedroom that is too warm is bad for sleep quality. To avoid losing heat, you can keep the shutters or curtains closed.

The temperature in a children’s room fluctuates between 18 and 20 degrees. Until the age of two, children cannot properly regulate their own body temperature.

Bathroom

When the bathroom is used, the appropriate temperature is at least 22 degrees. The thermostat can then drop to 17°C. Keep the temperature at least above 16 degrees to avoid condensation.

Not at home

If no one is home during the day, the thermostat can be set to 16 degrees for that period. If no one is present for a longer period of time, the thermostat can even be set to 12 to 14 degrees.
