Finding the Christmas Spirit: Jānis Gabrāns Shares Thoughts on Creating Festive Mood

Jānis Gabrāns

During the waiting for Christmas, we especially want the feelings that we had in childhood during this holiday. Yes, there was no Christmas in my childhood, but the feeling of waiting for the turn of the year was something special. So year after year we try to get them somehow, but nothing. It’s as if he knows for himself that he can’t return to the feelings of his childhood, but he still wants to, even for a moment.

The wise say that you should create a festive feeling for yourself by watching Christmas movies, listening to music, decorating the house, decorating the tree. Taking into account the dark season, when it is already night in the afternoon, going to get a Christmas tree should be postponed until the very eve of the holiday, when a free Saturday falls. But then Christmas Eve a day later, you may not get that feeling.

Regarding Christmas movies, we have to conclude that they are unfortunately becoming more and more uniform, even more primitive. Already after the first 10-15 minutes, the further plot line and resolution is clear. Of course, there is always a chance to watch “Home Alone”, but you should also take a break from it, as well as from some Latvian films that are shown on every holiday. Then it’s better to put a burning fireplace on the TV screen and let Christmas songs play in the background.

The options are probably the widest here, and using the web or app offer, we can choose what style of Christmas music we want to listen to – from classical to rap and the heaviest rock. Even when entering stores, we are often greeted with theme songs, but in reality, everything should be in moderation. As an acquaintance who works in a large store said, he would definitely not want to listen to Christmas carols at home or in the car, having listened to them at work, and what’s too much, it’s a pain.

Where to find feelings? City? Unfortunately, we have to conclude that the celebration in Cēsis has not really been conjured up. Yes, there are two beautifully decorated Christmas trees, but that’s about it. Year after year, the festive lighting has been shrinking. On weekday evenings, walking along the Rose Square, it becomes sad that there is no festive mood there at all. Then I thought, why can’t there be muted Christmas music in the evenings, why can’t there be some more magnificent decoration, lighting, why can’t hot drinks, snacks, treats be sold in the glass verandas. Invite those who want to trade without asking any rent for it. Rīgas iela, which the municipality wants to position as a festive street, has not found its decoration either. At one stage, the lights at the houses are not even on, maybe they are not there at all, and you can pass by an acquaintance there without even noticing him. It can be seen that there is no shortage of people in the gift shops, there would be even more of them if the festive mood had been created. Yes, it may require more communication with landlords, businessmen about shop windows, decorating houses with strings of colored light bulbs, in order to make Riga Street and Roži Square a place where you just want to come and get into the festive spirit. I think the investment would be worth it. Those few hours on Saturdays, when the anticipation of Christmas is felt here, are not enough, because the real magic is when it gets dark, when everything becomes more magical, when it is much easier to create that sense of wonder.

On the Internet, we look with envy at Christmas markets in small European towns, where life hits a high wave even on weekday evenings, but for us, the Christmas tree in Rožu Square is left alone, let it cope on its own.
