Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced this Saturday that the municipal council of Tourcoing, a city of which he remained mayor until mid-September, had endorsed his desire to pay his unaffected mayor’s allowances, amounting to 20 000 euros, to the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA).
“This morning, in the municipal council of @TourcoingVille, promise kept: the 20,000 euros which represent the mayor’s indemnities not touched, will be paid to the @SPA_Officiel to help abandoned animals in this difficult period. Boris licks them. paws !” the minister wrote on his Twitter account, supporting video of his cat adopted at the Tourcoing SPA.

According to a report appearing in the minutes of this municipal council, available on the town hall’s website, “the non-payment of the mayor’s allowance to Gérald Darmanin from May 23 to September 6, 2020 generated an envelope of order of 20,000 euros “.
The council had to decide on the payment of an exceptional subsidy of 20,000 euros to the SPA of Tourcoing, which should be used to help individuals who want to sterilize or identify their cat.

Minister LREM became mayor of Tourcoing again on May 23, returning to a seat occupied between March 2014 – when the young elected then stamped UMP had delighted the city to the PS – and September 2017.
Mr. Darmanin did not resign from his post as mayor until September 2020, becoming a simple municipal councilor.
According to the case law established by Lionel Jospin in 1997, a minister cannot lead a local executive. This is an unwritten rule – which has suffered exceptions (Le Drian, Sarkozy …) – but the former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe had sanctified it in September 2019.
