In general diesel engine fuel is provided Pertamina, the largest fuel supplier, there are three, namely Solar or now known as Biosolar, Dexlite, and Pertamina Dex. Each type is adapted to the existing diesel engine technology in Indonesia.
Diesel engines, whose combustion process is different from gasoline engines because they rely on compression, are known to be capable of producing large torques, making them suitable for heavy work in difficult terrain.
Diesel engines are most widely used for large vehicles such as buses, trucks, heavy equipment, military vehicles but are also available in various passenger cars in the country.
Solar, Dexlite, and Pertamina Dex are made in different ways and have unique ingredients. The main difference in the octane value in diesel fuel is called the Cetane Number (CN).
Solar has the lowest CN among the three fuels, which is only 48. Meanwhile, Dexlite has CN 51 and Pertamina Dex CN 53.
CN serves to indicate the quality of combustion in the engine combustion chamber. The higher the CN content, the better the quality and performance of the engine that uses this fuel.
Apart from CN, another ingredient that determines the quality of the three Pertamina diesel fuels is sulfur. The lower the sulfur indicates the type of fuel is more environmentally friendly.
Solar contains a maximum of 2,500 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur, while Dexlite contains a maximum of 1,200 parts per million (ppm). Meanwhile, Pertamina Dex has a maximum of 300 parts per million (ppm).
Reported from official page Pertamina, the lower sulfur content will make the engine and exhaust gas of diesel vehicles cleaner.
On the other hand, if the sulfur content is too high, it will result in incomplete combustion and it will have a bad impact on the condition of the vehicle’s engine.
Furthermore, as the highest variant of the three types of diesel fuel, Pertamina Dex has the advantage of being added with additives which are claimed to provide protection for diesel engines.
