If you purchased certain products at Walmart, you could receive a cash payment
If you purchased some weighted groceries or bagged fruit at Walmart in recent years, you may be eligible for a cash payment from a class action settlement with the retailer. The settlement payment is a result of a class action lawsuit filed against Walmart, alleging that shoppers across the U.S. and Puerto Rico who bought certain sold-by-weight meat and seafood, as well as select citrus sold in bulk bags, paid more than the lowest advertised price in stores.
The settlement details and how to claim your payment
Walmart has agreed to pay $45 million to settle the lawsuit, although the company denies any wrongdoing. Impacted consumers now have the opportunity to submit claims for cash payments.
Consumers who purchased certain weighted meat, seafood, and bagged citrus products, including select oranges, grapefruit, and tangerines, between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, at Walmart in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, could be eligible for cash payments. The payment amount for each claim will vary. Even if a purchase receipt is no longer available, consumers without proof of purchase can still receive between $10 and $25, depending on the number of eligible products they claim to have bought during the settlement class period. Those with receipts or other documentation could be entitled to receive 2% of the total cost for each eligible product, with a maximum payment capped at $500.
How to receive your payment
If your claim is approved, you will receive your payment electronically through Venmo, Zelle, ACH, or a virtual pre-paid MasterCard. In case you are unable to receive electronic payments, you can request a paper check instead.
Important deadlines and feedback regarding the settlement
The deadline to submit a claim is June 5. The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled on June 12. If you have any objections or comments regarding the settlement, you can submit them until May 22.
